The National Association of Hispanic Publications Responds to Remarks Made by Presidential Hopeful Donald Trump

Washington, D.C. – June 29, 2015 – The National Association of Hispanic Publications (NAHP), finds the thoughtless comments of Presidential candidate Donald Trump regarding Mexicans highly offensive, abhorrent and disgusting to the entire Latino community of the United States. Not only were his remarks ignorant and boorish, but his lack of knowledge of our community makes him a questionable candidate for any public office.

“Mr. Trump knows only one thing and that is how to maximize his profits and his self-aggrandizement.  It now rests with our community to make him understand how this denigration of our community will cost his reputation and his bottom line.” Mr. Jonathan Sanchez, Chair of the NAHP Legislative Committee, said.

The Vice President of the organization, Ms. Martha Montoya, echoed the sentiment of the organization. She stated: “Mr. Trump will now become an object of derision and ridicule in our community.  We will not forget for a very long time his insults and disrespectful treatment.  Apologies at this stage are not enough. Mr. Trump needs not only an education on the richness, nobility and honor of our people, but a punishment that will assure he never forgets what happened here.”

The Latino community is made up not only of many proud and prosperous business people, but also of an overwhelming majority of decent, honest, hardworking recent immigrants, whether documented or not. We are certain many of them have helped build Mr. Trump’s buildings and have added to his bottom line.

Mr. Eddie Escobedo Jr.,  President of the NAHP had this to say: “The right to free speech is a core value of this democracy and we respect Mr. Trump’s right to exercise it.  Nonetheless, we also demand the respect for our Latino community which on a daily basis is becoming a more integral and vital segment of the United States of America.”
