MIAMI, Florida (June 17, 2016)—The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) today condemned the murder of reporter and news photographer Jay Torres in Dallas, Texas, and urged the local authorities to carry out an exhaustive investigation to determine the circumstances of the crime.
Jacinto Torres Hernández, known as Jay Torres, was 57. He also worked as a real estate agent. His body was found on Monday (June 13) in the back patio of a house that he was thinking of renovating in the Garland neighborhood of Dallas.
During nearly two decades Torres was a stringer for La Estrella, the Spanish-language edition of the newspaper Star Telegram, and he belonged to the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.
The chairman of the IAPA’s Committee on Freedom of the Press and Information, Claudio Paolillo, offered his condolences to Torres’ family and colleagues, and insisted “on the urgency that the authorities investigate, clarify and identify and punish the person or person responsible for this crime.”
Torres’ family members had not known his whereabouts since last Friday (June 10) and have not ruled out that the murder could be linked to his work as a journalist, as they declared in a press conference that he was investigating matters related to human trafficking and illegal immigration.
Paolillo, editor of the Montevideo, Uruguay, weekly Búsqueda, added, “Based on the experience of the IAPA, which for more than two decades has been following up cases of the murder of journalists in the Americas, we declare that one of the antidotal principles to combat violence and impunity is scrupulous investigation and effective and timely application of justice to criminals.”
For his part the editor-in-chief of La Estrella, Juan Antonio Ramos, said that Torres was working on a story for the newspaper which they had talked about last week, and added, “at no time did we think there was any risk.” Ramos stressed the painstaking way that Torres worked on his articles.
Torres was born in the Mexican city of Monterrey, in Nuevo León state, and in 1979 immigrated to the United States.

Pide investigación expedita por asesinato de periodista en Dallas
Miami (17 de junio de 2016).- La Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa (SIP) condenó el asesinato del periodista y fotógrafo Jay Torres en la ciudad estadounidense de Dallas y exhortó a las autoridades locales a realizar una investigación exhaustiva para determinar las circunstancias del crimen.
Jacinto Torres Hernández, conocido como Jay Torres, tenía 57 años. El cadáver de Torres, quien también se desempeñaba como agente de bienes raíces, fue hallado el lunes 13 de junio en el patio trasero de una casa que estaba considerando reparar en la comunidad de Garland en Dallas, estado de Texas.
Durante casi dos décadas Torres colaboró con La Estrella, la versión en español del periódico Star Telegram, y pertenecía a la Asociación Nacional de Periodistas Hispanos.
El presidente de la Comisión de Libertad de Prensa e Información de la SIP, Claudio Paolillo, expresó sus condolencias a familiares y colegas del periodista, al tiempo que insistió “en la urgencia de que las autoridades indaguen, esclarezcan, señalen y juzguen a la persona o personas responsables del crimen”.
La familia de Torres desconocía su paradero desde el viernes 10 de junio y no descartan que el asesinato pudiera estar relacionado con su labor periodística, ya que aseguraron en conferencia de prensa que él estaba investigando temas relacionados con el tráfico de personas y la inmigración ilegal.
Paolillo, director del semanario uruguayo Búsqueda, agregó que “a partir de la experiencia de la SIP, que durante más de dos décadas viene dando seguimiento a casos de asesinatos de periodistas en las Américas, destacamos que uno de los principales antídotos para combatir la violencia y la impunidad es la investigación escrupulosa y la aplicación efectiva y oportuna de la justicia contra los criminales”.
Por su parte, el director ejecutivo de La Estrella, Juan Antonio Ramos, afirmó que Torres estaba trabajando en una historia para el diario sobre la cual conversaron la semana pasada y agregó que “en ningún momento pensamos que existía algún riesgo”. Ramos destacó el esmero con que el periodista trabajaba sus artículos.
Torres nació en la ciudad mexicana de Monterrey en el estado de Nuevo León y en 1979 emigró a los Estados Unidos.
